Overview

THERE ARE 158 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, AND THAT NUMBER IS EXPECTED TO RISE TO 281 MILLION BY 2050. HELP US REALIZE OUR VISION OF A FUTURE WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE EMPOWERED TO REALIZE THEIR HEALTH, WELL-BEING AND DIGNITY THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATION.

Access to quality comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) and youth-friendly SRH services is key to achieving the vision of the end of AIDS as a public health threat, but requires accelerated efforts to secure commitment and support  for scale-up. Less than 50% of young people demonstrate accurate knowledge about HIV prevention and transmission, meaning that more information and education on sexual health is needed.

CSE also addresses crucial issues like early and unintended pregnancy and gender-based violence. Early and unintended pregnancy is the first cause of death among 15- to 19-year-old girls globally. Experience of intimate partner violence increases the likelihood that a woman will acquire HIV by up to 55%.

03 works with Ministries of Education, Civil Society and other partners to strengthen access to accurate, rights-based, good quality comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly SRH services.

Opportunity

Our rights, Our lives, Our future

Imagine a sub-Saharan Africa where positive health, education and gender equality outcomes are a reality for all adolescents and young people.

UNESCO envisages this through the Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3 ) Programme (2018-2022), which aims for a consistent reduction in new HIV infections, early and unintended pregnancies, gender-based violence, and child marriage.

The O3 Programme will support the delivery of good quality comprehensive sexuality education that empowers adolescents and young people, while developing the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and competencies needed to sustain positive education, health and gender equality outcomes.
